Spring-loaded rotary encoder mounting bracket

You know the application of these measuring units from your DIY store. When you buy a carpet, the metres you have to pay for are measured automatically while unrolling the carpet. The measurement is done by a measuring wheel which moves synchronously on the carpet and shows the number of metres removed from the roll on a small display.
In the industrial sector, where high precision is required, this is realised by using high-precision measuring systems. ABP-Antriebstechnik manufactures and supplies the appropriate components. Our new inhouse-produced spring-loaded rotary encoder mounting bracket DHAF completes the product range of rotary encoder accessories of ABP-Antriebstechnik. After successful introduction of the measuring wheels with 500 mm circumference in 2012, only one thing was still missing: an appropriate mounting bracket for rotary encoders in connection with the ABP measuring wheels. The high level of quality of the ABP measuring wheels featuring an aluminium core and 4 different running surface structures has proven its worth and, within a short period of time, has established successfully on the market (see article on “Measuring wheels”). The new rotary encoder mounting bracket (see fig.) is provided with a mounting plate with 6 holes arranged in a 60° grid pattern (pitch diameter of 48 mm). The big advantage of this arrangement lies in the assembly of the rotary encoder. Compared to a 3-hole solution, it is possible to realise an almost ideal direction of the rotary encoder cable. The rotary encoder mounting bracket is fitted with a parallel-moving mounting plate for the rotary encoder and two guide pillars. The mounting plate is provided with 4 special plastic bearings for minimum friction.
A significant advantage over angles with one-sided bearing is that the rotary encoder mounting bracket can be mounted regardless of the direction of rotation of the measuring wheel. This is advantageous for reversing systems, since measuring errors can thus be avoided. The required contact pressure is generated by springs. The maximum spring travel is 8 mm with a contact force of approx. 1.5 KG. Technical characteristics at a glance:
